Guwahati: Former Planning Commission member and social activist Syeda Hameed is facing multiple legal cases in Assam. The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) confirmed that 16 FIRs have been filed against her across as many districts.
The action follows remarks made by Hameed during a public event in Guwahati on August 24. While speaking on migration, she reportedly said, “If Bangladeshis live in Assam, then what is the problem?” The statement sparked immediate backlash from regional groups who accused her of undermining Assamese identity and disturbing communal harmony.
AJP spokesperson Jiyaur Rahman said the party is pressing for her arrest and that their workers will continue to register complaints in additional police stations. He added that the FIRs cite sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions dealing with offences against public peace, public mischief, and defamation. Police investigations are underway.
