25 MPs Write to Amit Shah Against Illegal Detention of Bengali-Speaking Citizens

More than 25 Members of Parliament have written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They have demanded an immediate stop to the illegal detention, arrest, torture, and expulsion of Bengali-speaking Indian citizens.
The letter is led by Malda Dakshin MP Isha Khan Choudhury. It highlights serious constitutional concerns and a growing trend of targeting Bengali-origin people.
The MPs have asked for two urgent actions. First, to stop the illegal detention of Bengali-speaking Indian citizens in various states. Second, to investigate and reverse the wrongful deportation of Amir Sk., an Indian citizen from Malda, who was allegedly sent to Bangladesh after being detained in Rajasthan.
Isha Khan Choudhury, nephew of late Union Minister A.B.A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, said this trend has worsened since October 2024. He stated that traders, hawkers, and labourers from Malda, Murshidabad, and Dinajpur have been harassed and arrested. These actions have taken place in Odisha, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Maharashtra.
Choudhury added that many arrested people had valid ID proofs like Aadhaar and PAN cards. He visited a detention centre in Gurugram, Haryana. There, he found over 150 detainees from Bengal and Assam allegedly held without due legal process.
He also criticised the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said it has blocked any questions on the issue in Parliament. “My Questions and Zero Hour submissions have been disallowed under Section 41(2) of the Lok Sabha Rules,” he wrote.
One of the most serious cases mentioned was of Amir Sk. He is a resident of Jalalpur, Malda. He was allegedly detained for two months in Rajasthan. After that, he was handed to the Border Security Force (BSF). The BSF allegedly expelled him to Bangladesh on July 22.
Choudhury said Amir had proper documents proving his Indian citizenship. These include his Aadhaar card and birth certificate.
“Today, Amir is stuck in a foreign land, moving from place to place, trying to prove who he is. This is a violation of his rights and the Indian Constitution,” he stated.
He cited Article 19(1) of the Constitution. It gives every citizen the right to move freely and practice any occupation across India. He urged Amit Shah to act as the Home Minister for all citizens — no matter their language, religion, or region.
The MPs asked for Amir Sk. to be brought back to India immediately. They also called for an investigation into all illegal detentions and deportations of Bengali-speaking citizens.
“If even one Indian citizen can be treated like this, then what remains of our democracy?” the letter concluded.
