50-Year-Old Man Lynched in West Bengal Amid Surge in Mob Attacks

Bhangar, West Bengal, July 8: In a tragic incident, 50-year-old Azgar Molla was lynched to death by a mob early Sunday morning in the Bhangar area of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. The attack is part of a disturbing rise in mob lynching cases in the region.

The victim, a resident of Phulbari, was found around 500 meters from the Bhangar police station, under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police. Initially mistaken for being intoxicated, Molla was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Locals had organized a night watch following a recent theft in Bhangar Bazar, and it is believed that the lynching occurred around 4:30 am. Witnesses reported that no one intervened to save Molla during the attack.

The police have sent Molla’s body for a postmortem and initiated an investigation, though no formal complaints have been filed.

Joy Prakash Majumdar, a leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), highlighted legislative delays as a contributing factor. “Mamata Banerjee’s government had drafted a law against mob attacks and lynching, and it was sent to Raj Bhavan for approval. Now, the Bill is stuck with Governor C V Ananda Bose,” Majumdar stated.

The incident underscores the growing concern over public safety and law enforcement in West Bengal, where mob-lynching cases have surged in districts including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Bardhaman, and Paschim Medinipur in recent weeks.
