East Champaran (Bihar) : A 65-year-old Muslim man, Sheikh Wazul Haq, was lynched near his home in Phulwaria village of Bihar’s East Champaran district. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, and he succumbed to his injuries the next day while undergoing treatment, reported the Siasat.
His 25-year-old son, Mujibur Rehman, who was also attacked alongside him, was critically injured but has since been discharged from the hospital. However, he remains in police custody.
Disturbing visuals of the assault have surfaced on social media, capturing a group of six to seven young men armed with sticks savagely beating the elderly man and his son as onlookers stood by without intervening. The horrific incident, which took place just outside their home, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
Police claim the violence was the result of a personal rivalry rooted in a Facebook comment made four months ago, dismissing any communal angle. A case has been registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 302 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and six individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the assault.
However, civil society members and human rights groups are calling for a deeper probe into possible communal motives behind the crime. They argue that such patterns of violence against Muslims cannot be brushed aside as isolated personal disputes and must be addressed with urgency and justice.
Local leaders have demanded immediate action, compensation for the victim’s family, and assurance of protection for minorities in the area.
This tragic incident adds to the growing list of mob violence cases in India, raising serious concerns about law and order, hate crimes, and the state’s accountability in safeguarding vulnerable communities.
