9 May 2024: In a notable move aimed at fostering transparency and informed decision-making in the ongoing Lok Sabha Election 2024, Justice (Rtd.) Madan B. Lokur, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India; Justice (Rtd.) Ajit P. Shah, Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court; and Mr. N. Ram, Senior Journalist and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, have penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The missive extends an invitation for a public debate on crucial issues shaping the electoral discourse.
The letter, addressed to both political stalwarts, underscores the significance of engaging in a non-partisan dialogue, highlighting the pivotal role of citizens in the democratic process. It acknowledges the exchange of rhetoric during campaign rallies, where pressing questions regarding constitutional democracy, reservations, Article 370, and wealth redistribution have been raised by both the ruling BJP and the principal opposition party, INC.
Amidst the barrage of allegations and challenges, the letter expresses concern over the lack of substantive responses from either side. It underscores the prevalence of misinformation in the digital age and emphasizes the imperative of ensuring voter education to facilitate informed decision-making at the ballot box.
Proposing a non-commercial and non-partisan platform for public discourse, the letter advocates for a direct engagement between political leaders, enabling citizens to hear comprehensive perspectives and responses on key election issues. It emphasizes the potential of such a debate to enhance the democratic process and project India’s commitment to transparency and vibrant democratic norms on the global stage.
The esteemed signatories respectfully urge Modi and Gandhi to participate in a public debate, offering flexibility in terms of venue, duration, moderators, and format. They express confidence that such an initiative would not only educate the electorate but also exemplify the essence of a robust and inclusive democratic ethos.
The letter reflects a collective call for democratic engagement and transparency in India’s electoral process.
