13 May 2024: In a display of unwavering determination amidst adversity, voters in several Muslim-majority villages in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district showed extraordinary courage as they braved alleged police excesses to exercise their democratic right during the third phase of polling for the 2024 general elections.
Mohammad Anish, nursing wounds from the ordeal, recounted the harrowing experience of standing in line at the polling booth, only to face police brutality. He described how officers allegedly beat people and snatched their ID cards, attempting to deter them from voting.
Videos circulated from villages like Ovari, Mansoorpur, Shahbazpur Kalan, Manakpur, and Narauli, depicting scenes of chaos and voter suppression. However, these allegations were refuted by the Sambhal district administration, citing incidents of attempted multiple voting.
These villages, stronghold constituencies for the Samajwadi Party, witnessed a history of electoral dominance. Yet, the recent events underscored a disturbing trend of voter intimidation and violence.
Zia Ur Rehman Barq, the SP candidate from the region, demanded stringent action against the responsible authorities, emphasizing that mere transfers or suspensions wouldn’t suffice.
The testimonies of victims like Sabir and Nazma shed light on the magnitude of the ordeal. Sabir recounted being detained and beaten by police, while Nazma highlighted the physical and verbal abuse she endured while leaving the polling station.
Amidst allegations of targeting based on religious identity, the resilience of these voters shone through. Despite facing lathi charges and intimidation, Sambhal recorded a remarkable voter turnout of 62.81%, the highest in Uttar Pradesh for the third phase.
Raaes, a resident of Ovari, encapsulated the spirit of defiance, emphasizing how voters persisted despite injuries and obstacles, symbolizing the essence of democracy.
As the investigation continues and authorities are pressed for accountability, the courage and determination of the voters in Sambhal serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of democracy, where every vote counts, regardless of the challenges faced.
