On September 8, 2023, at 11 p.m. local time, Morocco was struck by a catastrophic 6.8-magnitude earthquake. The death toll has risen to 2,500 as rescuers tirelessly search for survivors in the rubble.
Approximately 2,497 people lost their lives in this calamity, which wreaked havoc on villages in the High Atlas Mountains. Seismological experts predict that Morocco will continue to experience aftershocks for several more weeks or even months.
According to Remy Mossu, the head of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the country has already endured more than 25 aftershocks following the initial 6.8-magnitude earthquake.
Reacting to this tragic incident, Syed Sadatullah Husaini, President, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, expressed his condolences: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the devastating earthquake in Morocco, which has claimed the lives of over 2,500 people. We extend our heartfelt condolences and stand in solidarity with the people of Morocco during this hour of grief.
“Our prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. We urge the international community, including the Government of India, to unite in support of the Moroccan people, offering any and all possible assistance and relief.”
