Architect Imran Abbas Shaikh Redefines Mosque Architecture in India

26 May 2024: Architect Imran Abbas Shaikh from Pune, Maharashtra, is transforming the landscape of mosque architecture in India with his innovative and culturally infused designs. As the founder of Cubix Architects, Imran blends modernity with tradition, creating spaces that serve both spiritual and community needs.

A Journey Rooted in Passion
Imran’s journey to becoming a prominent architect began with a strong foundation in his hometown of Pune. Influenced by his father’s belief in the power of architecture to shape the future, Imran pursued his education at Bharati Vidyapeeth, where he excelled academically. His early years at SSPM and Children’s Academy in Shivaji Nagar, Pune, and later at Poona College, laid the groundwork for his distinguished career.

Vision and Inspiration
Imran’s choice of architecture as a career was fueled by his love for travel, exploration, and various art forms. His father’s unwavering support and pride in his accomplishments further motivated him. Imran believes that architecture, which he traces back to the dawn of mankind, is about more than just structures; it is about creating enduring legacies. He emphasizes the importance of reducing dependency on modern technologies and encourages a hands-on approach to learning and innovation.

Innovative Mosque Designs
Imran’s notable projects include the under-construction ‘Muhammad Bin Abdullah Mosque’ in Dhannipur, Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. This 4,500 square meter mosque will be the first in India to feature five minarets, symbolizing the five pillars of Islam. It will also include a hospital, community kitchen, library, and research center, embodying his philosophy of integrating functionality with spirituality. The mosque’s unique pentagon shape and plans for the world’s largest Quran further highlight Imran’s visionary approach.

His other significant works include the Kausar Baugh Masjid in Pune, the Islamic Spiritual Centre of Maulana Sajjad Nomani in Neral, and several Islamic school and institutional campuses in Maharashtra, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Commitment to Education and Community
Beyond architecture, Imran is dedicated to education through his nonprofit organization, the Human Embrace Foundation, which provides quality education to children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds in Pune. His efforts in education and architecture serve as an inspiration, encouraging young people to strive for excellence and contribute positively to society.

Imran Abbas Shaikh’s contributions to architecture and his community-driven projects exemplify the transformative power of design, setting a new standard for mosque architecture in India.
