Cyclonic Rainfall Devastates Manipur: Floods and Landslides Cause Chaos

Imphal, May 29, 2024: Manipur experienced severe devastation on Tuesday morning as cyclonic rainfall led to widespread floods and landslides, causing significant disruption and damage across the state, reports The Assam Tribune.

Senapati town faced severe flooding, with water inundating offices and homes. Residents were forced to seek refuge on the upper floors of buildings as the ground floors were submerged.

The situation along National Highway 37, also known as Imphal Jiribam Road, was equally dire. Landslides and mudslides temporarily severed the critical route connecting Imphal with Assam, leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both sides as they awaited the arrival of excavators to clear the debris.

Churachandpur town also suffered as its main roads were submerged in muddy water due to the relentless heavy rainfall.

In Imphal East, several areas, including the congested Andro parking, were completely submerged. The deluge affected many parts of Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and other districts, with residents in the Wangkei Ayangpali Road area unable to leave their homes.

One of the region’s largest hospitals, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), was also hit hard by the rainfall, with staff reporting flooding within the hospital premises.

The catastrophic weather has wreaked havoc across Manipur, causing extensive damage and posing significant challenges for the local population and authorities.
