Bengaluru, June 2: The Solidarity Youth Movement (SYM) of Karnataka has expressed strong condemnation of the recent Israeli assault on Rafah, Gaza, which resulted in the tragic loss of at least 45 lives, including women and children, in a tent camp housing displaced Palestinians.
In a statement, SYM declared solidarity with the Palestinian people, urging the United Nations and the international community to take swift and decisive action to halt the violence and enforce a ceasefire. The movement emphasized the need for the protection of innocent lives and the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the conflict has led to the deaths of over 36,000 Palestinians and injured 80,200 since October 7, 2023. The situation in Rafah has deteriorated severely, with over 800,000 people displaced since May 6, 2024, and thousands living without essential services. Food distribution has been suspended due to severe shortages and insecurity, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Despite an International Court of Justice (ICJ) order to cease military operations in Rafah, Israel’s ground offensive continues, targeting what was designated as one of the last ‘safe zones’ for Palestinian civilians. This has resulted in dire humanitarian consequences.
Furthermore, SYM highlighted the arrest of over 2,500 university students worldwide who protested against the actions in Gaza, calling on the UN Security Council to enforce ICJ orders, facilitate humanitarian aid, and investigate violations of international law.
SYM’s demands are as follows:
- Immediate Ceasefire: The movement calls for the UN and international community to enforce an immediate ceasefire to protect innocent lives and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.
- Free Palestinian State: SYM reaffirms its demand for the establishment of a free Palestinian state, advocating for self-determination and justice.
- India’s Role: India, as a friend of the Palestinian people, should leverage its influence to urge the international community to restore peace, uphold international law, and maintain humanitarian values.
- Enforce ICJ Orders: The movement calls on the UN Security Council to ensure Israel complies with the ICJ’s orders, upholding international law and meeting its mandated obligations.
The Solidarity Youth Movement underscores the urgent need for international action to uphold justice, protect human rights, and ensure peace and security in the region.
