Kolkata, June 12: A faculty member at LJD Law College, a private institution affiliated with the University of Calcutta, recently resigned over a disagreement involving the wearing of a hijab. Sanjida Qadar, who had been teaching at the college for three years, submitted her resignation on June 5 after she was allegedly asked by the college authorities to refrain from wearing her hijab at work.
The controversy sparked a public outcry, leading to the college authorities clarifying their position. They claimed that the incident resulted from a miscommunication and assured that they had never intended to prohibit Qadar from wearing her hijab. Gopal Das, the chairman of the college’s governing body, stated, “There was no directive or prohibition, and the college authorities respect the religious sentiments of every stakeholder.”
Qadar had been wearing the hijab to work since March-April, but the issue seemed to escalate in the last week of May. Following her resignation, the college engaged in discussions with her, emphasizing that their dress code allows faculty members to use a dupatta or scarf to cover their heads during classes.
As the situation stands, Qadar is reconsidering her resignation. She received an email from the college clarifying their dress code policy and indicating their respect for her religious practices. Despite this, she has yet to decide whether she will return to the college.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions and the need for clear communication regarding religious attire in educational institutions.
