New Delhi, June 21: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is set to challenge the Delhi trial court’s decision to grant interim bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi High Court today. Kejriwal, who was arrested on March 21 over alleged irregularities in the excise policy, received interim bail on May 10 to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. His bail was set to expire on June 2, but the trial court extended it, allowing him to surrender voluntarily.
Despite the ED’s request to keep the bail order in abeyance for 48 hours, the Delhi court permitted Kejriwal’s release upon posting a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh, which will be presented before the Duty judge today. Consequently, Kejriwal is expected to walk out of Tihar Jail by this afternoon.
Kejriwal is the second Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader to be granted bail in this case, following Sanjay Singh. Meanwhile, another prominent AAP leader, Manish Sisodia, remains lodged in Tihar Jail.
The ED’s appeal in the High Court aims to contest the trial court’s judgement and possibly reverse the bail order.
