11 Jul. 24: During the by-election voting in Manglaur, Uttarakhand, reports have emerged of disturbing clashes and alleged voter suppression targeting Muslim voters. Videos circulating on social media depict scenes of violence, with several individuals, including elderly Muslims, reportedly injured and prevented from casting their votes.
Congress candidate Qazi Nizamuddin has accused unidentified assailants of firing shots during the incident, although local police have not confirmed gunfire. He condemned the lack of immediate medical assistance for those injured, describing the events as a threat to democracy.
Former Uttarakhand CM and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat echoed these concerns, alleging deliberate intimidation of Congress supporters and obstruction of voter access to polling booths. He urged the public to stand against what he termed as an assault on democratic principles.
On the other hand, SP Rural Swapan Kishore Singh assured that the situation was under control with adequate police presence to maintain peace. He emphasized ongoing efforts to restore normalcy amidst the controversy.
The Manglaur bypoll was triggered following the demise of BSP MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari last year. The constituency, known for its significant Muslim and Dalit population, witnesses a keen electoral contest with BSP’s Ubedur Rehman, Congress’ Qazi Nizamuddin, and BJP’s Kartar Singh Bhadana vying for victory.
