Hakim Anisur Rahman contributed to the development of Unani medicine

Hakim Anisur Rahman, a patron of All India Unani Tibbi Congress, passed away in Delhi on September 15. He was 76 years old. He is survived by wife, three daughters and one son.

He was a man of noble heart and serious personality. He made huge contributions to the development of Unani medicine. He had family relations with Hakim Abdul Hameed. Hakim Anisur Rahman started his career in medicine from Hamdard Nursing Home where Hakim Abdul Hameed used to attend to patients. He did Diploma in Unani Medicine from Aryan Education & Research Institute, Calcutta. Thereafter he stayed in Calcutta and obtained a degree in this field. In view of his influence, he was made patron of Delhi State Tibbi Congress. He was also a member of Adam Medical Centre, Daryaganj, Delhi.

His biggest work was the publication of Caravan Urdu daily which continued to be published from Pataudi House for about 15 years. The Caravan was first published as a fortnightly magazine, then became a weekly and later a daily newspaper. Senior journalist Zafar Anwar Shakarpuri, who edited the Carvan for a decade and was very close to the Hakim Anisur Rahman told Radiance that when he started feeling unwell, he sold the Caravan newspaper. This newspaper was distributed free in Old Delhi.

Hakim Anisur Rahman was of a very generous character. He had a special feeling for humanity. When he was elected Chairman of Janata Cooperative Bank (established by Delhi Mayor Meer Mushtaq Ahmed) and remained in the position for three consecutive terms, he gave loans to many needy persons. The bank’s branches also increased during his chairmanship. As long as he was chairman, he opened seven branches of the Bank in Delhi. The bank used to work only on interest, yet they worked for the welfare of the people through it. He was on Hajj Committee and attached with many other minority organisations. He was also associated with many Muslim educational institutions and committees in Old Delhi.
