Jaipur: A 42-year-old migrant laborer from West Bengal was beaten to death by his colleagues in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on September 3. The victim, identified as Moti Ali from Malda district, was working at a jewelry shop in the city.
The fatal attack occurred during a dinner gathering after a heated argument. Ali suffered severe injuries to his head, stomach, and back. He contacted friends about intense stomach pain, who then rushed him to a hospital. Doctors found extensive damage to his intestines and other internal organs. Despite emergency surgery, Ali died from his injuries on September 6.
Ali’s body was transported back to his village on September 8. His widow, Roshnara, lamented, “I spoke to him on Wednesday when he reported stomach pain. Within two days, he was gone. He was the sole provider for our family.”
The incident has led to protests in his village, with calls for justice for Ali and other Bengali migrant workers. West Bengal ministers Tajmul Hossain and Sabina Yeasmin participated in the protests and visited Ali’s family. Yeasmin criticized the safety of Bengali workers in BJP-ruled states, citing recent violent incidents involving migrant workers from West Bengal.
The West Bengal government has provided financial support to Ali’s family, including a cheque of Rs. 2,25,000 for burial expenses. Additionally, the government has promised assistance with a widow pension and the education of Ali’s children.
