Srinagar: Mohammad Shafi Pandit, the first Muslim IAS officer from Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Thursday at the age of 80. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer at a Delhi hospital for about a month. Pandit, known for his soft-spoken nature and distinguished career, made history in 1969 when he became the first Muslim from J&K to qualify for the civil services examination.
He held several important positions, including Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission. Throughout his career, Pandit was recognized for his contributions to civil society, particularly his role in implementing the Mandal Commission report as a Joint Secretary in the Government of India in 1992. Pandit was also actively involved in mentoring young aspirants for civil services, helping shape future generations of Kashmiri civil servants. His body was flown to Srinagar, where he was laid to rest.
