Symposium on Role of Moral Values in Social Reconstruction Held in Lucknow

Lucknow: A symposium focusing on the role of moral values in the reconstruction of society was organized by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind at a local hotel today. As part of the monthlong campaign on “Morality is Freedom,” the event was presided over by Professor Mohammad Salim Engineer, Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, who emphasized that a society can only truly progress when its members embody exemplary moral character and actively promote ethical values.

During his address, Professor Salim Engineer stated that the tranquillity and social reform of a community are rooted in moral values. He urged attendees to make every effort to promote these values to enhance societal welfare. Connecting moral ethics with the concept of the afterlife, he stressed that ethical conduct is crucial for improving human actions, asserting that death is not the end but a transition to an eternal realm where individuals will be accountable for their deeds.

Referencing the Quran, he highlighted that Islam is fundamentally about establishing justice, and it is moral values that enable this justice to manifest within society. He concluded by affirming that those who live their lives according to the teachings of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, showcasing high moral standards, will find paradise awaiting them.

The symposium featured various intellectuals and social activists who shared insights on the importance of moral values and their potential for fostering social improvement.

The event commenced with recitation of the Quran by Mufti Ali Naeem Razzi, followed by opening remarks from Zainab Al-Ghazali, a prominent member of JIH Uttar Pradesh East. She pointed out that the absence of moral authority is a significant issue in contemporary society, manifesting in corruption and other societal evils. She emphasized the failure of the educational system in providing ethical training, advocating that implementing Quranic teachings can facilitate societal transformation.

Dr. Bikchu Gayan Lok underscored the importance of embracing truth and rejecting falsehood, noting that lies are the root of all evils. He suggested that if individuals commit to never telling lies, they would naturally avoid many major sins. He encouraged starting this commitment at home, praising children for honesty.

Fr. Vinay Philip highlighted the significance of mutual love and forgiveness, stating that these qualities play a crucial role in societal cohesion. He remarked that fostering these attributes can elevate moral standards within communities.

Chin Kan, referencing Jain teachings, stated that moral values should permeate every aspect of life, and it is essential to take responsibility for educating and promoting these values continuously. Senior journalist Anand Varadhan Singh described the decline of moral values in the modern era as a serious issue, particularly lamenting the rising incidents of violence against women and children. He emphasized the necessity of spending quality time with family and elders to promote ethical training.

Gianni Gurjinder Singh connected the concept of morality to the human self, asserting that moral reform begins within oneself and is reflected in one’s actions.

The program was moderated by Muhammad Saber Khan, and city coordinator Dr. Amjeed Saeed Falahi thanked all speakers and participants. A large number of men and women attended the event.
