Bengaluru: The government of Karnataka led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided to dismiss rioting charges against 138 individuals, and among them was also AIMIM corporator Mohammad Arif. This decision was made during a state cabinet meeting held on Thursday and relates to the violent disturbances that occurred at Old Hubballi Police Station in April 2022.
On April 16, 2022, an incident following the dissemination of a derogatory image on social media portrayed a saffron flag positioned on a mosque. This image incited very strong anger, prompting a huge gathering of individuals from Muslims outside Old Hubballi Police Station. The demonstration escalated into violence, causing damage to property, destruction of vehicles, and injuries to four police officers.
Mohammad Arif, together with 138 other individuals, faced serious allegations, including attempted murder and rioting. This decision to dismiss rioting charges came in response to petitions submitted in 2023 by Anjuman-e-Islam, which called on the government to re-evaluate the case following the Congress party’s assumption of power.
The decision has been criticized particularly from opposition figures. BJP leader Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan has charged the Congress with engaging in appeasement and vote-bank politics. He stated, according to ANI, “The Congress consistently advocates for appeasement and vote-bank strategies; they have been revealed time and again.”
