Mazhar Asif Appointed New Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia

New Delhi: Professor Mazhar Asif of Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Languages has been named the new Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. The announcement was made by the Union Ministry of Education, following approval by the President of India, who serves as the university’s Visitor.

According to The Hindu, Professor Asif, an alumna of JNU, will serve as Vice-Chancellor for a five-year term, or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first. His appointment is viewed as a notable move, given his background in language studies and his role in drafting India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“The President of India has appointed Prof Mazhar Asif as the vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. He brings a wealth of academic experience from his tenure at JNU and his contribution to educational reforms,” an official from the ministry stated.

Professor Asif’s academic and policy contributions are expected to play a vital role in shaping the future of Jamia Millia Islamia, one of India’s most prestigious institutions.
