5 October 2023: The President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maharashtra, Maulana Mohammed Ilyas Khan Falahi expressed deep concern over the rising number of hospital deaths in the state and called for accountability from the government and health authorities.
The JIH Maharashtra President said, “We feel these lives have been lost due to state negligence. This is unacceptable. We demand answers and accountability from the government and hospital authorities.
“It is being said that medicine supply and recruitment of doctors were stuck due to unknown reasons. The required staff to attend to the patients was insufficient to handle the number of patients. There are accusations that the public health department authorities were demanding a hefty commission for awarding contracts for medical supplies. All these things should be investigated by the government-ordered probe.
“However, JIH Maharashtra demands that the findings of this investigation should be made public. The lower officials should not be made scapegoats for passing the responsibility on their heads. Rather, accountability must begin from the top as those in the positions of power and policymaking are responsible for how public health is shaped in the state. We feel that the tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need for a total overhaul of our healthcare system.”
So far 35 patients, including include 12 infants, have died at the Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital, Nanded and 24 patients have died at the Ghati Government Hospital in Aurangabad, and 25 have died at the Mayo Hospital in Nagpur.
Meanwhile, a division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Arif Doctor of the Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the situation arising from the growing number of deaths in the government hospitals in Maharashtra.
