ASSP Demands Protection of Assam Minorities

New Delhi: The Assam Minority Sangram Parishad (ASSP) organised a three-hour sit-in at Jantar Mantar here Sunday, protesting against the oppression and harassment of minorities in Assam, the divisive politics of hate, and inhumane evictions of minorities under the pretext of identifying D-voters. Following the demonstration, it submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, urging immediate action to protect Assam’s minority communities.

During the protest, ASSP presented several key demands:

1. Issue land ownership documents (patta) to landless people in Assam, including a survey of char (river island) areas to secure land rights for residents.
2. Resettle people displaced by riverbank erosion along the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
3. Provide Rs.25 lakh in compensation to the families of Jabahir Ali (22) and Haidar Ali (19), killed in police firing in Sonapur, Kamrup Metro, and Rs.5 lakh for each injured individual.
4. End harassment and discrimination against labourers and innocent Muslims in Upper Assam.
5. Conduct a judicial inquiry into the Dhing rape incident and ensure justice is served.
6. Review the BTR Accord to exclude majority Non-Bodo villages, compensate families affected by BTR violence, and resettle ethnic violence victims.
7. Issue Aadhaar cards to people who provided biometrics during the NRC preparation.
8. Recognise Assam’s flood and erosion issues as a national problem, with scientific solutions for long-term mitigation.
9. Construct a bridge over the Brahmaputra River, from Nagarbera Bazar (Kamrup) to Bamun Dongra via Alopati Majar Char Bazar (Barpeta).
10. Build an RCC bridge over the Jaljali River from Baghmara Char (Barpeta) to Simlitola Bazar (Goalpara).
11. Halt privatisation of government-owned properties in Assam.
12. Reinstate and fund madrasa education in Assam.
13. Implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, officially defining “Assamese” and indigenous peoples.
14. Improve and upgrade facilities in detention centres.
15. Allocate land to genuine Indian minorities and provide services, jobs, licenses, and contracts based on population demographics.
