Aligarh: Seven students from the German Studies Section in the Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have secured the prestigious DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Scholarship. This opportunity will enable them to participate in summer courses at top German institutions in 2025, joining a global cohort of international students and graduates.
Among the selected students is Mr. Ragib, an MA first-year student, along with six BA final-year students: Zainul Abedin, Azhar Zia, Abdul Wasey, Hareem Baig, Basil Igbal, and M. Kamran. They qualified for the scholarship after clearing the B1 and higher levels of the onSET German proficiency test held at AMU on October 29, 2024.
The scholarship selection process was a collaborative effort between the German Studies Section and the DAAD office in Delhi. DAAD representative Dr. Jan Helge Weidemann, a lecturer from the University of Delhi, conducted the examination at the Prof. M.N. Faruqui Computer Centre on AMU campus.
Following the test, Dr. Weidemann delivered a resourceful talk titled “Study in Germany: Ways and Opportunities,” where he outlined various educational pathways in Germany, the scholarship application process, and the unique benefits of studying in a renowned academic setting.
The selected AMU students are set to begin their summer courses in Germany in July 2025. Each scholarship, valued at 2,559 Euros, covers airfare, accommodation, a tour of historic sites in Germany, and tuition for the month-long programme.
This achievement marks the second consecutive year of success for AMU’s German Studies students, with two students having earned the scholarship in the previous year as well.
Professor Muhammad Azhar, Chairman of the Department and Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, commended the students, saying, “This accomplishment highlights the quality of education provided by our faculty. With the rising demand for foreign language skills, this scholarship stands as an important milestone for promoting foreign language education in the region.”
Assistant Professor Syed Salman Abbas also congratulated the students, noting, “This is the second time students from our department have received this prestigious scholarship. We are grateful to DAAD for their support and recognition of our students.”
Dr. Subair PM, Assistant Professor of the German Section, expressed his appreciation through a vote of thanks, acknowledging the dedicated efforts of all involved in making this opportunity possible for AMU students.
