A grenade attack at a bustling Sunday market in Srinagar left 12 people injured, raising fresh concerns over security in Jammu and Kashmir. The injured have been swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack, as per a report by The Hindu.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep distress over the incident, emphasising that there is “no justification” for harming innocent civilians.
In a post on X, he described the attack as “deeply disturbing,” calling on security forces to restore a sense of safety. “The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear,” Mr. Abdullah stated.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has taken immediate action, directing senior police and security officials to pursue a “forceful response” against those responsible. In a conversation with Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other senior security officers, Lt Governor Sinha authorized an assertive approach to counter terrorism and promised to hold the attackers and their supporters accountable. “You have full freedom to crush terror outfits and leave no stone unturned to complete this mission,” he affirmed.
This attack follows a series of confrontations between terrorists and security personnel in the region. Just yesterday, security forces neutralized a key Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist commander named Usman in Srinagar’s Khanyar area. Inspector General of Police Vidhi Kumar Birdi confirmed Usman’s identity as a high-ranking LeT member and described him as a “foreign terrorist.”
Additionally, two terrorists were killed in a separate encounter in the Anantnag district. These incidents underscore the continuing challenges faced by the security forces as they work to counter terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
The recent string of attacks has renewed calls for strengthened counter-terrorism measures, as residents hope for stability and safety in the region.
