New Delhi: The Supreme Court has expressed serious concern over the substandard living conditions at Assam’s Matia Transit Camp, where ‘foreign nationals’ are detained.
A bench led by Justices Abhay Oka and A.G. Masih described the camp’s conditions as “far from satisfactory,” referencing a report by the State Level Services Authority (SLSA) that outlined severe deficiencies in essential services and infrastructure.
Justice Oka highlighted the urgent need for improvement, stating, “There are no facilities available. There is no vocational training centre, no distance education, and no female doctor present.”
The lack of healthcare provisions for female detainees, as well as the absence of educational and vocational programmes critical to detainee rehabilitation, were specifically underscored.
In response to these troubling findings, the SC ordered the Secretary of the relevant Assam government department to conduct an immediate review of the camp’s conditions.
