Opposition Leaders Voice Concerns over JPC Chairman’s Conduct on Waqf Amendment Bill, Seek Intervention from LS Speaker

New Delhi: In a bid to address serious concerns surrounding the recently introduced Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, opposition members met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, raising strong objections to the conduct of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Chairman, Jagdambika Pal. According to the opposition, Pal’s approach to handling discussions on the bill has sidelined critical inputs, leading to amendments that they believe misrepresent the purpose of Waqf properties and undermine the integrity of the Waqf Board.

During the meeting with Speaker Birla, Opposition leaders argued that the proposed amendments would dilute the original framework and values of the Waqf Board, posing a risk to the rights and representation of communities dependent on these properties. They emphasised that the modifications could potentially create misunderstandings among the public about the functions and intentions of the Waqf Board, an institution historically established to manage charitable endowments for the benefit of underprivileged communities.

The leaders underscored that Jagdambika Pal’s conduct as JPC Chairman did not reflect an inclusive or transparent process, with multiple concerns from Opposition members allegedly overlooked. They called for Speaker Birla’s intervention to ensure a fair and balanced approach in addressing these issues before the bill proceeds further in the legislative process.

Acknowledging the Opposition’s grievances, Speaker Om Birla assured them he would thoroughly examine their objections and promised to seek solutions that respect the values and public trust vested in Waqf properties. Birla also highlighted the importance of ensuring that any legislative changes should reflect a consensus that respects the foundational purpose of the Waqf Board.

The Opposition’s stand highlights a broader demand for clarity and accountability in legislative amendments affecting community institutions and properties, with calls to uphold transparency and inclusivity in parliamentary proceedings.
