Bengaluru: Congress’ Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan created a history of sorts by winning the Shiggaon Assembly constituency for the Grand Old Party after almost 25 years in the recent by-poll by defeating BJP’s Bharat Bommai by 13,448 votes. While Pathan polled 1,00,756 votes (52.41%), Bharat secured 87,308 votes (45.41%). The Congress last won Shiggaon in 1994.
Yasir Pathan attributes his electoral success to his close ties with ordinary people. “Being close to the people and the cattle is what brings me peace,” he stated, emphasising his bond with both the community and the land. His humble demeanour helped him connect easily with villagers. Coming from a large family of 30 members, Pathan considers the workers who supported him as part of his extended family. His deep-rooted connection to farming brings him personal joy. He often mentions that true happiness comes from working in the fields and engaging with the community.
Speaking to the Indian Express, Yasir said my priorities are to improve healthcare, education, and irrigation, and create more jobs. Currently, people from Shiggaon travel to neighbouring districts for healthcare and education. The youth of this constituency seek employment in places like Goa and coffee-growing regions. The irrigation projects launched by the previous government have failed to deliver the expected results. I have my own plans to enhance the living conditions in the constituency, which I will discuss with the district minister and other officials concerned to make them a reality.
With the entry of Yasir Pathan in state assembly the Muslim members’ strength has increased to 10.
