New Delhi: The Lok Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions on Thursday as opposition parties staged protests over two contentious issues: alleged financial irregularities involving the Adani Group and the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, reports the Times of India.
As the session began, opposition MPs demanded a discussion on recent allegations of misconduct against the Adani Group. Simultaneously, they raised concerns over communal tensions in Sambhal, where a series of violent incidents have drawn widespread criticism.
Leaders from parties including Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party accused the government of shielding the Adani Group while ignoring public interest. Addressing the media outside Parliament, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remarked, “The government’s silence on the Adani issue is deafening. Why is it afraid of an impartial probe?”
Opposition members also criticized the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government for its alleged failure to maintain peace in Sambhal. Communal violence in the region has reportedly escalated, sparking demands for immediate intervention.
The government countered the opposition’s claims, accusing them of disrupting proceedings for political gains. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said, “The opposition is misleading the public. They are stalling Parliament instead of engaging in constructive debates.”
Despite repeated attempts by Speaker Om Birla to restore order, opposition MPs continued their protests, chanting slogans and waving placards. With the chaos unrelenting, the Speaker adjourned the House until 2 PM.
The opposition has put forth two primary demands:
- Formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the allegations against the Adani Group.
- Immediate debate on the Sambhal violence, along with a detailed report on Uttar Pradesh’s law and order situation.
The ongoing disruptions highlight an escalating standoff between the government and the opposition during the winter session of Parliament.
While the government aims to prioritise legislative agendas, the demand for accountability on these matters continues to dominate the political discourse. Whether the government will yield to the opposition’s demands remains uncertain as the session progresses.
