Congress MP Imran Masood Condemns Police Brutality in Sambhal Violence

Congress MP Imran Masood has strongly criticised the police’s actions during the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, accusing authorities of disproportionately targeting Muslims. In a video that has surfaced online, Masood, who represents Saharanpur, expressed outrage at what he termed the systematic persecution of Muslims, reports the Hindustan Times.

Masood alleged that Muslims are left with no safe options, stating, “If Muslims step out of their homes, they are killed by the police. If they remain indoors, they are dragged out and killed. What are Muslims supposed to do?”

Highlighting the use of excessive force, he remarked, “Bullets were fired, piercing through bodies. To control stone-pelters, the police could have used non-lethal means, such as lathi charges or shooting at the legs, but they chose to fire bullets.” He decried the apparent lack of value placed on Muslim lives and the broader implications of hate-fuelled politics, warning, “Don’t burn this country. Hatred will consume us all.”

Masood also criticised the media and authorities for their biased narrative. He questioned the singular focus on stone pelters while ignoring the plight of those whose homes were destroyed. “If they are stone pelters, arrest them and take strict action. But this cannot justify fatal violence,” he said, urging authorities to adopt proportionate measures.

The Congress leader’s remarks come amidst growing tensions and accusations of police targeting minorities in Uttar Pradesh. Masood’s call for justice and restraint has added a significant voice to the ongoing debate about police conduct and communal harmony in the region.
