New Delhi: In response to a question from Samajwadi Party leader Ramjilal Suman in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, provided details about immovable properties donated to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) since its establishment in 1920.
The SP leader’s questions were (a) Whether properties, such as land and buildings, have been donated across different parts of the country by well-wishers of the University since its inception in December 1920; (b) If so, details of such properties, including district-wise information, the donors’ names, the mode of transfer (e.g., gift or waqf), the area of each property, and how these properties are being utilised to benefit the institution; and (c) The mechanism employed by the University to manage such properties.
In his reply, the minister stated:
(a) & (b): Yes, immovable properties in the form of lands and buildings have been donated to AMU by its well-wishers across various parts of the country since 1920. Detailed information on these properties is enclosed as an annexure.
(c): According to Statute 17(2)(v) of the Aligarh Muslim University Act, 1920 (Act XL of 1920), the University’s Executive Council is empowered to manage, regulate, and administer all matters related to its immovable properties. Additionally, under Chapter-II of the Ordinances (Executive) and as per Section 16 (3-D) and Statute 6, the Finance Officer serves as the custodian of all immovable properties belonging to the University.
