New Delhi: The Al Sharq Youth-India Hub, in collaboration with Ibn Khaldun Centre for Civilizational Research (IKCCR), hosted a thought-provoking webinar featuring Palestinian-Jordanian speaker Aseel Hassan. The session delved into the historical, cultural, and political complexities of Palestine’s identity and ongoing struggles.
Aseel Hassan, a mathematics student and active humanitarian volunteer with a diploma in Jerusalem Sciences, shared her insights on the challenges faced by Palestinians. Her contributions stem from her involvement in youth initiatives and social justice projects addressing issues in Palestine and the wider Ummah.
The webinar explored personal connections to Palestine, focusing on how displaced Palestinians sustain their heritage and trace family roots. Discussions also examined historical milestones such as the British Mandate of 1917, the Balfour Declaration, the Nakba of 1948, and the related massacres and displacement. The complexities of land ownership, the controversial sale of Palestinian land to Jewish immigrants, and the role of global powers in facilitating these transactions were key highlights.
The struggles of Palestinian refugees and those who remained post-Nakba were analysed, alongside pivotal events like the Six-Day War, shifts in Palestinian demands, and the Oslo Accords. The discussion emphasised that the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) did not represent the entire Palestinian population and shed light on decisions by leaders like Yasser Arafat.
Participants debated whether the conflict is territorial or deeply tied to religious identities, with nuanced perspectives on the distinctions between Zionism and Judaism. Aseel Hassan reflected on the resilience of Gazans, who continue to resist displacement despite harsh conditions. The discussion also explored how the international community, including India, can support the Palestinian cause.
The session concluded with reflections on the challenges of understanding the Palestinian issue through available materials and included recommendations for authentic resources for further research.
Moderated by Syeda Shumaila, India Hub Coordinator, with Zahid Afzal introducing the activities of Al Sharq Youth-India Hub, the event offered valuable insights into Palestine’s enduring struggles and aspirations.
