NSUI President Urges Immediate Reversal of Protest Ban at JMI

New Delhi: Varun Choudhary, President of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), has written to Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, demanding immediate withdrawal of Jamia Millia Islamia’s order restricting students’ right to protest.

In his letter, Choudhary expressed strong opposition to the memorandum issued by JMI on November 29, prohibiting students from organising protests or raising slogans without prior approval. He described the directive as “draconian,” asserting that it stifles students’ voices addressing critical issues such as rising fees, campus violence, and administrative lapses, thereby infringing on their constitutional rights under Article 10.

“Jamia has a proud history of fostering debate and dissent,” the letter states. “This authoritarian measure tarnishes its legacy and alienates the student community. We urge your immediate intervention to revoke this memorandum, ensuring the protection of students’ democratic rights in all educational institutions. The future of our democracy depends on empowering, not silencing, our youth. We request swift action to uphold their rights,” Choudhary added.
