Belgaum, a city steeped in history and harmony, holds a special place in India’s journey toward freedom and unity. It was here, in 1924, that Mahatma Gandhi presided over the Indian National Congress’s only centenary session, emphasising inclusivity and collective action. Continuing this rich legacy of unity, Belgaum now witnesses another milestone with the inauguration of the Mahila Sadbhavana Manch on January 8, 2025.
Organised by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), this initiative is a testament to the enduring spirit of harmony that defines this city. The Mahila Sadbhavana Manch aims to bring women together across social, cultural, and religious lines to foster peace, love, and understanding – a cause as relevant today as it was a century ago.
Unity in Diversity
The event brought together women from diverse religious, cultural, and social backgrounds, underscoring the universal need for harmony and peaceful coexistence. The enthusiastic participation of attendees highlighted a shared vision for a better society, making the occasion a true celebration of unity in diversity.
The programme began with an inspiring prayer and address by Ms. Shagufta, who emphasised the urgency of eradicating hatred and communal divides. A powerful documentary presented during the event shed light on the challenges faced by the nation today, leaving the audience introspective yet motivated.
Key speakers shared their experiences and aspirations, adding a deeply personal touch to the proceedings:
- Mapeishis Mariyamma, a retired teacher from St. Paul High School and president of an orphanage for AIDS-affected children, spoke passionately about her dream of an equitable India. “This Manch reaffirms my hope for a nation free of caste and religious barriers, where humanity takes precedence over all else,” she said.
- Kasturi Nadl, a social worker and member of the Dalit Sangathan, expressed her pride in joining the platform. “The Sadbhavana Manch provides a space where I can dedicate myself to helping the vulnerable and creating a life of dignity for all,” she stated.
- Parveen Sheikh, recalling her struggles, remarked, “I have endured immense pain, but through this Manch, I hope to ensure no one else suffers as I did. Together, we can mend the fractures in our society and bring about a brighter future.”
- Yogita Patil, Principal of Bharatesh English Medium School and trainer for the Smart Girls Programme, called the initiative “a movement for collective good” and described it as a “harbinger of social transformation.”
- Madina, a consulting pathologist, highlighted the significance of collective action: “This platform unites us for a common cause, reminding us that small efforts combined can create monumental change.”
- Manda Nogi, President of the Anganwadi Taluka Association, spoke about women’s issues, urging everyone to work toward turning the slogan “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” into a reality.
- Anupama Benson, a high school principal, lauded the Manch as “a shining example of unity and diversity, where people from all walks of life come together to achieve a common goal of peace and harmony.”
JIH’s Commitment to Harmony
Ms. Humaira, Assistant Secretary of JIH Karnataka, reinforced the importance of realising the dreams of freedom envisioned by the nation’s forefathers. “This initiative is a step toward achieving a society free from hatred, rooted in mutual respect and social justice,” she remarked.
Concluding the programme, Ms. Tashkeela Khanum, Secretary of JIH Karnataka, expressed her gratitude and reaffirmed the Manch’s mission to combat discrimination, hatred, and communal violence. “The Sadbhavana Manch will actively work to maintain peace and harmony while promoting social justice and equality,” she said.
The event concluded with the election of conveners and co-conveners, followed by a dinner arranged by the JIH Women’s Wing of Belgaum. Attendees pledged to dedicate themselves to creating a better, more inclusive society.
The inauguration of the Mahila Sadbhavana Manch is not just an event but a testament to Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s sustained efforts to foster unity and understanding in India. This initiative serves as a reminder that positive change is possible when communities unite with a shared purpose. For Belgaum and beyond, it inspires collective action for a harmonious and inclusive future.
