Installing Protective Nets on Bhiwandi Flyover Demanded to Contain Manjha-Led Accidents

Concerned over accidents caused by Chinese manjha (kite string), citizens and social organisations have urged the municipal administration to implement safety measures. As Makar Sankranti approaches, the enthusiasm for kite flying reaches its peak. However, the increasing use of nylon string to gain an edge in kite flying competitions has also led to a rise in the number of accidents. Particularly on the Balasaheb Thackeray Flyover, motorcyclists have been injured and even killed. Considering this, residents have demanded that protective nets be installed on both sides of the flyover, similar to measures implemented in Thane.

Low protective walls of a flyover, surrounded by high-rise buildings, have become a safety concern for motorcyclists. Kites flown from these buildings, often using nylon manjha, have led to several accidents. Riders have suffered severe injuries, with incidents of manjha entangling their necks, causing falls and even fatalities. Despite safety gear like helmets, the risk persists, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures.

Dr. Shafiq Siddiqui, president of Operation Mukt Bhiwandi, has demanded the installation of protective nets like iron sheets on the flyover, as has been done on the stretch of the flyover from Majiwada to Vandana Bus Stop in Thane. He stated that this would not only safeguard motorcyclists but also reduce the number of accidents.

Municipal Corporation City Engineer Jameel Patel noted that the government has banned the sale of Chinese manjha, and police and municipal authorities have already conducted raids at several locations.
