Mumbai: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Maharashtra, President, Maulana Ilyas Khan Falahi offered condolences to bereaved families in the Jalgaon Train Accident, and urged government to enhance safety measures.
In a statement to the media, the JIH Maharashtra President said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic train accident in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, where precious lives were lost, and several were injured. On behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maharashtra, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray that Allah grants them strength and patience during this difficult time. We also pray for the swift recovery of the injured. We appreciate the ex-gratia announced by the Maharashtra government for the victims’ families and urge authorities to expedite relief efforts.
“Reports suggest that the accident, killing 13 and seriously injuring many, occurred when sparks and smoke in one of the coaches of the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express caused panic among passengers, prompting someone to pull the train’s emergency chain. The train came to a halt between Maheji and Pardhade stations. Fearing a fire, some passengers jumped onto the tracks, where they were tragically struck by the Karnataka Express travelling from Bengaluru to Delhi.”
Maulana Ilyas Falahi advised, “This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of remaining calm and composed during moments of crisis. Panic often leads to tragic consequences, as seen in this incident. We urge our fellow citizens to avoid jumping to conclusions in emergencies and to follow the guidance of authorities and trained personnel. At the same time, we urge the government to take immediate steps to enhance passenger safety on trains. We strongly recommend the installation of public address (PA) systems in all trains, similar to those in aircraft, to ensure clear communication during emergencies. Additionally, the installation of CCTV cameras in coaches will help monitor and manage such situations effectively.
“The Railway Ministry must have safety marshals manning the trains in sufficient numbers. These measures will not only prevent the spread of misinformation but also instil a sense of security among passengers. The government must undertake a fresh study of how to enhance safety measures in trains given the increasing number of major accidents in recent years.”
