Court Denies Bail to 15 Muslims in Sambhal Mosque Violence Case

Sambhal, UP – A local court has rejected the bail pleas of 15 Muslims accused in the violent clashes that erupted during a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in November, reported the Clarion India.
The violence led to the deaths of five Muslims and injuries to over 25 police personnel. The court, citing strong evidence, ruled against granting bail.
Government lawyer Hariom Prakash Saini said Additional District Judge (II) Nirbhay Narayan Singh dismissed the plea, stating that CCTV footage identified the accused. The complainant had also named them in the case.
Despite Section 144 being in place, the accused allegedly refused to disperse and attacked police with stones and firearms. Protesters also set government vehicles on fire and looted police equipment.
Among those denied bail are Aamir, Sameer, Yakub, Sajjaddin, Sajju, Mohammad Rehan, Naeem, Mohammad Gulfam, Mohammad Salim, Tehzeeb, Mohammad Ali, Shariq, Mohammad Firoz, and Mohammad Shadab. In a separate case, two women, Rukaiya and Farhana, were also denied bail.
The ruling has sparked mixed reactions. Mohammad Asif, a local shopkeeper, said, “The survey felt like a targeted attack on the Muslim community, and the police response only worsened the situation.” Others supported the decision, with resident Ramesh Kumar stating, “No one should attack the police or damage public property.”
Human rights activists have called for an independent probe, alleging excessive police force. Anjali Sharma, an activist, emphasized, “There must be accountability on all sides.”
Families of the accused await further legal proceedings. Fatima, sister of one of the accused, said, “We trust the judiciary but just want justice and peace.”
With tensions still high, residents hope for a resolution that ensures both justice and communal harmony.
