Ayodhya: A horrific crime has shaken Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya district, where a 22-year-old Dalit woman was found brutally murdered in a canal near her village. Her family alleges she was gang-raped and tortured, with her body showing signs of severe violence, including broken bones and gouged-out eyes.
The young woman had gone missing on Thursday night after leaving home around 10 p.m. to attend a religious gathering. When she did not return, her family searched for her throughout the village before filing a missing person report at the local police station on Friday. However, they claim that the police were slow to respond, delaying critical search efforts.
On Saturday morning, her brother-in-law discovered her body in a secluded canal, bound with ropes. The gruesome condition of the corpse-deep wounds, a fractured skull, and severe injuries-suggested she had suffered extreme brutality. Authorities suspect sexual assault but await forensic confirmation through an autopsy.
Ayodhya Circle Officer Ashutosh Tiwari confirmed that a missing person report had been filed, and further action would follow based on forensic findings. The incident has ignited outrage, with political leaders strongly condemning the crime and questioning the state’s law and order situation.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized administrative negligence, demanding strict action against the perpetrators and police officers who failed to act promptly. He also called for 1 crore in compensation for the victim’s family.
Ayodhya MP Awadhesh Prasad was deeply moved upon learning about the case. In an emotional moment captured on video, he broke down while addressing reporters, vowing to raise the issue in Parliament. Overcome with sorrow, he questioned, “What will history say? How did this happen to the girl child?” In a heartfelt outburst, he invoked Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, asking, “Where are you?”

The case has once again highlighted the extreme vulnerability of Dalit women in India, raising serious concerns about justice and accountability. The victim’s family continues to demand a swift and transparent investigation.
