Rising Attacks on Muslim Vendors in North India Raise Concerns

Muslim vendors in North India are facing harassment, eviction, and threats from Hindutva groups, raising fears of growing religious intolerance.
In Firozpur, Uttar Pradesh, Hindutva men harassed Muslim women wearing hijabs. They shouted “Jai Shri Ram” and hurled abuses in a public space. The incident sparked outrage, with activists condemning the attack on women for their attire.
On January 25, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, a Muslim vendor selling posters and idols at Kumbh Mela was harassed and evicted by Hindutva men. The police were present but took no action as the mob demanded his arrest. The vendor, a longtime local businessman, was forced to leave.
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on February 5, Kali Sena members declared a local market a “Sanatani Market” and forcibly removed Muslim vendors. They questioned vendors about their religion and warned them not to return. They also issued violent threats. Civil rights groups condemned the incident as a violation of fundamental rights and economic freedom.
These attacks show a disturbing rise in discrimination against Muslim traders. While affected individuals and community leaders demand action, authorities have not taken any steps to stop such incidents or punish the perpetrators.
Human rights activists and legal experts warn that these actions violate constitutional equality and deepen communal divisions. As tensions rise, demands for immediate government intervention and strict legal action are growing.
