Anti-Minority Hate Speech in India Surged by 74% in 2024: US-Based Research Group

New Delhi: Instances of anti-minority hate speech in India witnessed a sharp rise of 74% in 2024, according to a report by the US-based research group India Hate Lab. The organization documented 1,165 cases of what it classified as hate speech last year, a significant increase from 668 incidents recorded in 2023.
The report highlighted that these instances were observed at various public events, including political rallies, religious processions, protest marches, and cultural gatherings. The findings have raised concerns about the growing polarization and the impact of such rhetoric on social harmony in the country.
The surge in hate speech incidents has sparked discussions among civil society groups and human rights organizations, with calls for stricter legal action and increased vigilance by authorities. Critics argue that the rise in such incidents reflects a broader pattern of intolerance, while government officials have yet to formally respond to the report’s findings.
India has seen a growing debate on hate speech laws, with activists urging stronger enforcement to curb communal tensions. The report by India Hate Lab adds to the ongoing discourse, emphasizing the need for measures to counter hate speech and protect minority communities from targeted verbal attacks.
The findings come at a time when political and social divisions remain a key issue in the country, with observers noting the role of online platforms and public discourse in shaping narratives that contribute to communal discord.
