Atishi Becomes First Woman Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly

New Delhi: AAP MLA and former Chief Minister Atishi Marlena has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly, marking a historic first for the capital.
This appointment makes her the first woman to hold the position in the Delhi Assembly and the first woman LoP to face a woman Chief Minister, BJP’s Rekha Gupta.
Atishi, who took over as Delhi’s youngest Chief Minister in September 2024, held key portfolios in the last AAP government, including Education, Power, Water, PWD, and Services.
AAP MLA Gopal Rai announced the decision, stating, “In the legislative party meeting, it has been unanimously decided that Atishi will be the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly.” He added that AAP will act as a strong Opposition if the BJP fails to fulfill its promises.
Expressing her gratitude, Atishi thanked AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the party for their trust. She pledged to hold the new government accountable, particularly regarding promises made to women.
“We promise the women of Delhi that we will ensure the Rekha Gupta-led government fulfills its commitment of providing ₹2,500 as promised,” she said.
The BJP secured a historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5, winning 48 out of 70 seats and ending AAP’s decade-long rule. AAP won 22 seats, while Congress failed to open its account.
