World Memon Organisation Delegation Visits AMU to Honor Arabic Scholar Prof. Abdul Aziz Memoni
Aligarh: A delegation from the World Memon Organisation (WMO) recently visited Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to gain insight into the works of the esteemed Arabic scholar, the late Professor Abdul Aziz Memoni.
Invited by Prof. Sanaullah Nadvi, Head of the Department of Arabic at AMU, the delegation was introduced to Prof. Memoni’s contributions to Arabic language and literature. Prof. Nadvi expressed his desire for the Memon community to engage with Prof. Memoni’s scholarly legacy and support the establishment of a dedicated chair in his honor at AMU’s Arabic department.
Prof. Abdul Aziz Memoni, who led AMU’s Arabic Department between 1936 and 1956, was widely recognized for his research and publications, many of which were published in Egypt and Lebanon. His work on rare Arabic manuscripts continues to be highly regarded in academic circles.
Welcoming the delegation, AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naeema Khatoon highlighted the department’s international recognition and the continued scholarly interest it attracts, including from European researchers.
During a formal gathering at the Arabic department, Prof. Nadvi acknowledged the delegation’s presence and emphasized Prof. Memoni’s unparalleled contributions to Arabic studies. He extended special thanks to Haseen Aghadi, head of WMO (India Chapter), for leading the delegation’s visit from Mumbai and other parts of the country.
Expressing his gratitude, Aghadi remarked that it was a matter of pride for the Memon community that an accomplished Arabic scholar like Prof. Memoni hailed from their ranks. Other members of the delegation echoed similar sentiments, appreciating the rich intellectual heritage left by Prof. Memoni.
As part of their visit, the delegation also toured Memon Manzil, Prof. Memoni’s former residence at Badar Baug in Aligarh. Aghadi assured that WMO would take initiatives to restore the house in his memory.
Additionally, the delegation explored significant sites at AMU, including the historic Jama Masjid and the grave of AMU’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, situated within the mosque premises.
The 11-member delegation included Sharif Memon (General Secretary, WMO), Ismail Memon, Shakil Batliwala (Chairman, Sports Committee), Abdul Qadir Memon, Salim Bandukiya (CEO), Farooque Surya, Mohsin Surya, Abdul Razzaq Memon Engineer, and Prof. Md. Qutbuddin from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi.
The visit underscored the importance of preserving the legacy of distinguished scholars and fostering deeper engagement between AMU and the Memon community.
