Ahmedabad: In a shocking incident, three Muslim men were brutally assaulted by a mob of cow vigilantes while transporting buffaloes in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on February 19. The victims, identified as Ishaq Mohammed, Farooq, and Musharraf Ahmed, were attacked by a group of 20-25 people, who mercilessly beat them with sticks and forced them to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram.’
Among the three, Ishaq suffered severe injuries, including a fractured jaw, and is in critical condition. The attackers reportedly attempted to extort ₹1.50 lakh from the victims.
Speaking to local media, Musharraf described the ordeal, stating, “They brought sticks in vehicles and started hitting us. I was injured, but my brother Ishaq was beaten even more brutally.” Despite possessing legal permits for transporting the buffaloes, the victims’ pleas went unheard as the mob continued their assault and demanded ransom.
When the victims approached the police to file a complaint, they were met with resistance. Instead of registering an FIR against the attackers, the police allegedly filed a case against the victims based on a complaint from the vigilantes. They were also reportedly made to wait for hours before the police outright refused to take their complaint.
Following widespread outrage on social media, authorities finally registered an FIR. Advocate Nauman, representing the victims, revealed that a police officer admitted that such cases are often ignored.
The incident has sparked anger and concern over the rising cases of mob violence and the role of law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
