Abdullah Azam Khan Walks Free After 17 Months in Jail

New Delhi: In a notable legal development, Abdullah Azam Khan, son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, has been released from jail after 17 months of imprisonment. His release follows the approval of his bail by the court, with the release warrant reaching the jail administration on Monday, paving the way for his freedom on Tuesday.

Abdullah Azam Khan had been sentenced to seven years in prison in 2023 in a case related to possessing two birth certificates. Following the court’s ruling, he was placed in judicial custody and lodged in Rampur district jail. His parents, Azam Khan and Tanzin Fatima, were also imprisoned. Later, due to security concerns, Azam Khan was shifted to Sitapur jail, while Abdullah was transferred to Hardoi district jail. Although Tanzin Fatima secured bail, Abdullah remained incarcerated until now.

According to his lawyer, Nasir Sultan, the court had granted bail a few days ago, but the completion of formalities, including verification of sureties, delayed the release warrant, which was finally issued on Monday. Abdullah Azam Khan was officially released today, sparking immense joy among his supporters.

On Monday, the MP-MLA Magistrate Trial Court sent the release warrant to Hardoi jail. As news of his impending freedom spread, a large number of supporters gathered outside the district jail. Among them were key Samajwadi Party leaders, including Moradabad MP Roohi Vora. Expressing faith in the judicial system, Vora remarked, “We always believed in the court, and our faith remains intact. Justice has been served, and we hope for more in the future.”

Supporters from Rampur and other districts assembled to celebrate Abdullah’s release. However, police officials, citing the imposition of Section 144 in the district, warned against large gatherings. Amidst the crowd, Abdullah Azam Khan urged his supporters to remain patient and abide by the law.

His release comes as a major relief for his family and supporters, igniting celebrations within the Samajwadi Party circles.
