Ahilyanagar district collector Siddharam Salimath has launched an inquiry into a resolution prohibiting Muslim traders from conducting business during the Madhichi Yatra, a 700-year-old tradition in Madhi village, Maharashtra. The resolution, signed by village sarpanch Sanjay Markad and village development officer Anil Lawande, cites non-compliance with local customs as the reason for the ban.
The yatra begins on Holi and concludes on Gudhi Padwa, the Marathi New Year. According to officials, the village observes the festival as a period of mourning, abstaining from fried food, weddings, and even haircuts. The resolution claims that Muslim traders fail to adhere to these customs, justifying their exclusion.
Collector Salimath has tasked the zilla parishad CEO with investigating the issue, while block development officer Shivaji Kamble has also been directed to conduct a separate inquiry. Their reports will determine further action.
The incident has raised concerns over discriminatory practices, prompting discussions on religious freedom and economic exclusion. Local authorities are expected to take a final call based on the findings.
