Massive Protest Erupts at Jadavpur University Over Student Union Elections

Kolkata : Protests erupted at Jadavpur University recently during Education Minister Bratya Basu’s visit. Students allegedly vandalised his car and manhandled him. The protest, led by SFI and Left-wing groups, demanded student union elections, pending for ten years.
Basu attended the West Bengal College and University Professors Association (WBCUPA) meeting. Despite entering from another gate, he was surrounded by protesters after the event. Reports say students gheraoed his car and vandalised it. Basu was taken to SSKM Hospital, where doctors confirmed he was stable. Some protesters claimed students were injured by a vehicle in his convoy.
WBCUPA representatives filed a complaint against the student groups at Jadavpur police station. TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh condemned the attack, calling it planned hooliganism. He warned of strict action against those involved.
At the WBCUPA meeting, Basu criticised the protesters, questioning their silence against the BJP. After the incident, parts of the university’s ‘Shikshabandhu’ office were set on fire. Protesters also blocked the road near Jadavpur 8B bus stand.
Basu called the incident an “unprecedented attack.” CPIM state secretary Mohammad Salim dismissed his claims as “drama,” insisting the protest was peaceful. The incident has intensified campus tensions, with students demanding immediate elections.
