Cairo – Arab leaders have endorsed Egypt’s post-war proposal for Gaza, allowing its two million residents to remain in the territory, countering former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to depopulate and redevelop it, reported the Hindu.
The summit in Cairo, attended by leaders from Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, along with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, saw broad support for Egypt’s $53 billion reconstruction blueprint. The plan includes clearing debris, temporary housing, sustainable urban development, and economic revitalization. It proposes an interim administration replacing Hamas until a reformed Palestinian Authority takes control.
However, Israel remains resistant, demanding Hamas’ disarmament and rejecting Palestinian Authority governance. Trump’s controversial suggestion of relocating Gazans abroad was widely condemned by Arab nations and human rights groups.
As ceasefire talks stall, Israel maintains its blockade, drawing international criticism for alleged violations of humanitarian obligations. The ongoing conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, has claimed over 48,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
