Sambhal – A statement by Sambhal Circle Officer (CO) Anuj Chaudhary has triggered controversy after he suggested that those uncomfortable with Holi colours should stay indoors, while emphasizing the importance of a broad mindset in celebrating festivals together. His remarks came after a peace committee meeting at Kotwali police station, as Holi coincides with Friday prayers on March 14 during Ramzan.
Chaudhary noted that Holi is an annual festival, while Friday Namaz is observed 52 times a year, urging people to respect each other’s sentiments and avoid forcefully applying colours. He assured that authorities have been working for over a month to maintain peace and harmony.
However, opposition parties condemned his remarks. Samajwadi Party spokesperson Sharvendra Bikram Singh accused the officer of acting as a “BJP agent,” while Congress leader Manish Hindvi warned that such statements could incite tensions. Hindvi argued that officers must ensure a peaceful atmosphere for both Holi and Namaz without making politically charged remarks.
The incident has reignited debates on communal harmony and administrative neutrality in Uttar Pradesh.
