Sambhal Controversy: DM Bans Media Briefings Amid CO’s Holi Remarks

The Sambhal administration has imposed a ban on media briefings following the controversy surrounding CO Anuj Chaudhary’s statement about Holi and Jumu’ah prayers. The statement, which sparked outrage and opposition, went viral on social media, prompting the district administration to take action.
Sambhal DM Rajendra Pensia has issued an order stating that no senior or junior officer will make any statement to the media without prior approval. Any official statement will require permission from both the District Magistrate (DM) and the Superintendent of Police (SP).
CO Anuj Chaudhary commented on the coinciding dates of Holi and Jumu’ah, saying:
“Jumu’ah comes 52 times a year, but Holi is only once a year. If Muslims feel their religion will be affected by the colors of Holi, they should stay indoors. On the day of Holi, if anyone is found disturbing peace, they will not be spared. We will not let disorder spread in Sambhal.”
This statement was met with strong criticism, with political leaders and the opposition condemning it. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the BJP government and CO Anuj Chaudhary, questioning how communal harmony could be maintained when officials make such divisive remarks.
Following the uproar, SP Sambhal took action against CO Anuj Chaudhary. The incident further escalated tensions, with political parties using it to attack the ruling BJP government.
The ban on media briefings aims to control public narratives and maintain law and order in the region. However, concerns remain over the implications of restricting press freedom and accountability.
