Patna: The Waqf Amendment Bill has sparked massive protests in Bihar, with opposition parties and Muslim organizations strongly opposing the legislation. While Muslim groups staged a large demonstration in Patna, exerting pressure on the Nitish Kumar-led government, opposition parties also registered their dissent inside the Bihar Assembly, reported the Hindustan Times.
According to reports, opposition members have been continuously protesting against the government during the ongoing Assembly session. On Wednesday, before the session began, opposition leaders gathered outside the Assembly, holding posters and raising slogans against the bill. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the proposed amendment, calling it an attack on constitutional rights.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) strongly condemned the bill, labeling it a “black law” that threatens religious freedom, and the fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
“This Waqf Amendment Bill is nothing but an attempt to ignite unrest across the country. It is not just against the minority community but also against the very essence of our Constitution,” the RJD said in a statement.
The party further demanded that the Bihar government pass a resolution in the Assembly opposing the bill. “We have submitted a motion of adjournment in the Assembly today. Our demand is that the state government must introduce a resolution rejecting this anti-constitutional law,” an RJD spokesperson added.
Opposition leaders argue that the bill undermines the rights of religious communities and goes against the principle of equality granted to all religions in India.
Apart from the Assembly protest, large-scale demonstrations were held in Patna, where various Muslim organizations gathered to voice their discontent. Protesters accused the government of targeting Waqf properties and curbing religious freedoms.
With tensions rising, political and religious leaders continue to call for the bill’s withdrawal, warning of further agitation if their demands are not met.
