By Shakilur Rahman

November 2: A delegation of All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) visited Assam and met prominent leaders and organizations of the state. Central representatives of AIMMM discussed political and social issues with top leaders of the state at a meeting held in Guwahati on Saturday. The participants reiterated their commitment to work towards promoting unity and harmony in the society. Renowned political leader and former MP Syed Aziz Pasha was also present in this meeting.

The participants of the meeting expressed concern over alleged election rigging through EVMs and also discussed government atrocities on Muslims of Assam and rehabilitation of the victims.

Their visit focused on the social, political and economic problems of the country and the community, especially the discriminatory, provocative and contemptuous behavior towards minorities.

General Secretary of AIMMM and head of the delegation, Mr. Syed Tahseen Ahmed said that some divisive forces have a tendency to create anarchy in the country, so it is necessary for the people to unite to foil their plans. He said that to achieve this objective, the Mushawarat, in collaboration with social organizations and groups has launched “Violence Free India” campaign to promote peace and harmony in the country.

Mr. Shamsuzzuha, Secretary of Youth Wing of AIMMM, informed that the Mushawarat will regularize the organisation in Assam and its districts very soon. He also said that Muslims should work together with other minorities, whose total number in the state is more than 20%.

Many participants in the meeting expressed concern about the differences of classes and sects in the Muslim community and suggested to review and work within the community.

The attendees were of the opinion that elections in developed countries are held without EVMs, in India too, elections should be held similarly, without EVMs to ensure transparent and fair elections and this demand should be taken forward.

The local leaders drew the attention of the central representatives of AIMMM towards the Muslims of Assam who have been living on government land for generations and are being displaced by the present BJP government. The secretary general assured to help sort out the subject and sought the cooperation of local organizations and leaders to solve this issue.

The meeting was attended by representatives of prominent social organizations like Jamiat Ulam-e-Hind, Jamiat Ahle Hadith Assam, Minority Shagroon Council, Assam Civil Society and Justice Forum Assam. Apart from the representatives of these organisations, prominent leaders of some districts, intellectuals and former bureaucrats, including Professor Abdul Manan (Former Professor, Guwahati University), Muhammad Alauddin IAS (Retd), Mr. Azizur Rahman (Former Principal and former president of All Assam Muslim Students Union) and Mr. Lashkar Ali also attended the meeting.
