RJD to Challenge Waqf Amendment Law in Supreme Court Today

New Delhi: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is all set to file a petition in the Supreme Court on Monday challenging the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha and senior leader Fayaz Ahmed will spearhead the legal move, voicing concerns that the new law severely undermines the constitutional management of Waqf properties—religious endowments crucial to the Muslim community, reported the Siasat.
According to Manoj Jha, the legislation poses a threat to the nation’s constitutional ethos and has the potential to disrupt communal harmony. He emphasized that the bill directly infringes on the rights of religious minorities and dilutes democratic values enshrined in the Constitution.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, now enacted into law, has already sparked a firestorm of criticism across opposition ranks. It is being seen as discriminatory, particularly by the Muslim community, as it imposes stricter regulations on Waqf properties that do not apply to other religious endowments.
Congress MP Mohammad Jawed had earlier moved the Supreme Court on April 4, contesting the law’s constitutionality and arguing that it violates the fundamental rights of Muslims by unfairly targeting their religious trusts. Jawed, who was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee that examined the bill, warned that the law is a deliberate attempt to erode minority rights.
AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi also filed a separate petition challenging the law’s provisions, echoing similar concerns about the bill’s discriminatory impact.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut stated on April 5 that his party would not challenge the law in court, indicating that the matter is closed from their side.
The legal battle over the Waqf Amendment Law is expected to intensify in the coming days, as more voices within the opposition unite to protect religious freedoms and constitutional safeguards.
